Hemp Oil

Hemp seeds are considered a superfood among many people due to their nutrients and health benefits. Although hemp seeds are derived from a form of the Cannabis sativa plant, it is worth noting that hemp seeds contain very little of the psychoactive compound, known as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and will not result in a high or mind-altering effect when consumed.

Legally, industrial hemp may only contain up to 0.3% of THC. Therefore, one will not experience the euphoric-like effects, as one would with marijuana. Marijuana can contain up to 28% THC, which will result in a mind-altering effect. Because industrial hemp does not contain a significant amount of psychoactive THC, it is legal to use and consume hemp products. Hemp seeds and many other hemp products can be found at certain grocery stores and most health food stores.

Hemp seeds are characterized by their brown color and small size and are rich in a wide range of nutrients, including fiber, protein, vitamins, minerals, and healthy fatty acids, such as omega-3 and omega-6. In addition, studies have shown that hemp seeds contain a high level of antioxidants, which may contribute to improving a number of ailments, such as skin problems, and more.

In this article, we will discuss the many benefits that researchers have found in hemp seeds and provide tips on how you can incorporate them into your daily diet.

1. Protein

Hemp seeds are rich in protein, containing a total of nine essential amino acids. Amino acids are organic compounds that are known as the building blocks for proteins. Very few plant-based foods do not account for complete sources of protein, therefore, it is important to incorporate hemp seeds into your diet, especially if you are vegan or vegetarian, in order to get a sufficient amount of protein.

2. Polyunsaturated Fats

Hemp seeds contain a high content of polyunsaturated fats, otherwise known as unsaturated fats. Unsaturated fats in hemp seeds are a great source of omega-3, which is crucial for long-term health. Additionally, having a balanced ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids is important, which are found in hemp seeds. Generally, many people consume too many omega-6s and not enough omega-3s; however, incorporating hemp seeds into your diet is an ideal way to get a good balance of both. Hemp seeds do not contain any trans fats and are low in saturated fats, which is also important for your health.

3. Fiber

Another health benefit that hemp seeds offer (particularly the shell or outer hull of the seed) is that it contains a high level of fiber. Therefore, be sure to consume the shell, in addition to the seed, to ensure that you are getting a sufficient amount of fiber.

Having a diet rich in fiber poses many great benefits, including weight management, stabilizing blood sugar levels, and promoting gut health.

4. Vitamins and Minerals

Hemp seeds are rich in a myriad of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin E, B vitamins, magnesium, potassium, zinc, iron, among many other vitamins and minerals.

5. Promotes Heart Health

Studies have shown that due to hemp seeds being rich in omega-3 fatty acids, this can potentially lead to benefits that promote heart health. The ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids poses incredible benefits, which may reduce the risks of heart disease.

In addition, hemp seeds contain arginine, which is the amino acid that is converted into nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is an essential molecule needed for dilation of the arteries and veins. As a result, researchers believe that nitric oxide can help maintain the blood vessel walls, keeping them in great health.

Hemp seeds, low blood pressure, a healthy and nutritional diet, as well as regular exercise, may help to reduce the risk of heart failure.

6. Anti-inflammatory Properties

Due to the healthful ratio of omega-3 to omega-6, studies have shown that they can work together and help with reducing inflammation. Additionally, hemp seeds contain a high level of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which is an unsaturated fatty acid that may contribute to anti-inflammatory benefits as well.

Researchers claim that anti-inflammation can also contribute to improving a host of other chronic conditions, such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Metabolic syndrome

7. Reduces Skin Problems

Researchers believe that the anti-inflammatory properties found in hemp seeds may reduce skin issues, such as atopic dermatitis (eczema) and acne. Some studies have shown that acne may be linked to a lack of omega-3 fatty acids. Because of the high content of omega-3s found in hemp seeds, studies have shown that they may help with managing acne issues.

The Takeaway

Hemp seeds can be found at certain grocery stores and many health food stores. Hemp products are legal throughout the U.S. because they do not contain enough THC to cause a high. Hemp seeds can be consumed in a variety of ways and added to salads as a topping, smoothies, protein bars, muffins, and more.

Because the hemp seeds are derived from a cannabis plant that contains no more than 0.3% THC (the psychoactive compound found in marijuana), people will not experience any type of high or euphoric-like feeling when consuming hemp seeds or other hemp products.

If you are considering consuming hemp seeds for their health benefits, then just like any supplement that you would take, it is important to discuss with your doctor before incorporating hemp seeds into your diet.
