How Are Liquid Diamonds Made?
Before we dive into how liquid diamonds are made, it is important to understand just how live resin is made. Live resin, which is a cannabis concentrate made of both fresh and frozen plants, is prepared during its living state. What this means is that live resin has not yet been treated with any form of heat at this stage and as a result, it contains more concentrated properties of the plant’s natural essence. Because of this, the properties of live resin are full of flavor, aroma, and strain and are far more enhanced due to the bold and bright terpene properties it holds.
There are two steps when freezing the trichomes while the plant is in its living state, which is through flash freezing with liquid nitrogen or dry ice.
Similarly, live resin experiences a process much like cannabis oil, which occurs when a solvent (such as butane) extracts the cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes, but this process is done after flash freezing the plant in its living state, as opposed to doing it when it has been dried and cured. Living plants can be frozen and must continue to be in their frozen state during the extraction process.
Crystallization
The next process is crystallization. Crystallization occurs immediately after the butane extraction. This is when the live diamonds concentrate begin to grow. There is a small amount of solvent that is leftover in the extract and it must purge out for at least 48 hours, resulting in a highly saturated sauce that causes the crystallization of THCa.
Live resin has two properties, which is the aromatic terpene ‘sauce’ component and the THCa diamond component. Generally, the diamonds have 95-99% of pure THCa and the sauce component has a blend of terpenes, as well as 30-40% of dissolved THCa. In order to separate the diamonds from the sauce, the sauce must be poured out from the diamonds.
Now is the time to harvest the diamonds from the live resin, which needs to be decarboxylated in order to convert THCa into the active form known as THC. This is done by heating up the diamonds. Once they have been decarbed, the live diamonds concentrate are converted into the liquid form and are reintroduced to the live resin sauce, resulting in the purest form of vape oil.
The Difference Between Liquid Diamonds With Live Resin vs. Distillate
Live resin has a saucy texture with very little crystal residue. Due to using fresh frozen plants throughout the process, the concentrate holds onto a great amount of terpenes, resulting in a lot of flavor. In addition, live resin contains less cannabinoids but more terpenes compared to distillate.
On the other hand, distillate can vary in color from being transparent, to yellowish-gold, and does not have any crystals or other impurities. Distillate is different from live resin, as it does not have any odor or flavor due to it going through a process known as fractional short-path distillation. Fractional short-path distillation is a process characterized by isolating each compound on its own because each of the compounds has different boiling points. In addition, distillate does not have terpenes, but has a high amount of THC, which is why it is commonly combined with botanical or reintroduced strain-specific terpenes if it is being produced for vaping.
Liquid diamonds are known for having a higher purity and an outstanding form of THC distillate that is manufactured without the need for distillation. For example, liquid diamond vapes have more terpene-rich properties that contain live resin and combine it with the potency, appearance, and higher purity of THCa diamonds, resulting in more flavor and potency, creating more powerful experiences and uses.
