Cannabis sugar is one of the most delicious and versatile ingredients. It lasts for more than three months and serves as a staple ingredient for other recipes. Chefs love it as it adds sweetness to several dishes with a dash of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Cane sugar marijuana comes in handy while making brownies, candies and many more items. You may even prepare cannabis sugar cookies and cocktails or use the sugar in your morning coffee.

Here’s a simple two-ingredient recipe for making cannabis-infused sugar:

What ingredients do I need?

Before getting started, you need to have the two ingredients ready for this recipe. The first one is a single cup of cannabis tincture. You can prepare an alcohol-based tincture using Green Dragon or Golden Dragon. Do not choose an oil-based tincture. The second ingredient is two cups of sugar. The ideal choice is white, granulated sugar. But you may also opt for brown, cane, coconut or turbinado sugar.

What is the process?

Begin by pouring sugar and tincture into a glass baking container. Mix them well. Store the container in a dry area and cover it with cotton or other breathable fabric. Let the mixture dry completely for two to three days. Remember to stir it every few hours.

That’s it! Your sugar is ready when it is completely dried and looks like any other sugar. The color of this sugar can be anything from light yellow to dark green. Store it in an airtight box and ensure that it remains dry all the time.

The recipe’s success depends on the total evaporation of alcohol. As alcohol is evaporated, it leaves behind extracted cannabis oils bound to sugar crystals. The best way is to let the alcohol dry naturally. It is not recommended to use heat as alcohol is a flammable substance. You may use a fan to quicken the process. Alternatively, you can try using a food dehydrator as well.

How to make the alcohol tincture?

Unfortunately, making marijuana sugar is not as effortless as it seems. The alcohol tincture is one of the key ingredients in the cannabis sugar recipe. Preparing the tincture is a time-consuming process.

Before preparing it, you should decarboxylate cannabis flower to get a superior quality product. Dried cannabis flower contains high levels of tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) and cannabidiolic acid (CBDA). Heating them converts the acids into active THC and cannabidiol (CBD). This process is known as decarboxylation. To decarboxylate, grind cannabis flower and bake it between 220 and 245 degrees Fahrenheit for around 30 to 45 minutes.

Once this is done, the next step is to make the cannabis tincture using alcohol. This step is similar to making vanilla extract. Remember to use high-quality alcohol for a high-quality tincture. Make a traditional tincture using Green Dragon or a contemporary one using Golden Dragon based on your preference.

What are some things to remember?

If you are making cannabis sugar for the first time, it’s important to make a note of the following things:

Use the right vessel

Use the right vessel for making the sugar. Make sure that your container has enough breathing space. Use a bigger one to allow faster alcohol evaporation.

Use a breathable fabric

Exposing your sugar to air is highly important. You should not close the container while it is still in the evaporation stage. However, covering it is necessary to avoid contamination. Use a breathable fabric such as cheesecloth to cover your container. Alternatively, you may use a coffee filter, too.

Dry it in a safe place

Store your mixture in a safe place for drying. Ensure that it is away from your cooking area as you may want to avoid accidentally spilling anything on it. You can keep the container on a vacant pantry shelf or above the refrigerator.

Keep stirring

Remember to stir your mixture frequently. Stirring means exposing your mixture to air. The more you stir, the better and faster it gets. Do it for a minimum of four to five times a day. If you do not stir often, the sugar crystals harden and become sticky. If this happens, use a food processor or a rolling pin to break the granules.

What are some other sugar types to make?

You can make several other sugar types by following the same steps as above.

  •       To make powdered sugar, add a single cup of prepared cannabis sugar with a single teaspoon of cornstarch into a blender and blend it to get a desired consistency
  •       If you are looking for sugar-free alternatives, use monk fruit sweetener or erythritol, non-nutritive sugar alcohol instead of white sugar

·       You can add dried, ground herbs to the prepared sugar to make different flavors such as lavender sugar

How to increase the potency?

People love high-strength sugar. Its potency is determined by the strength of the cannabis flower used in the alcohol tincture. Use good quality cannabis buds instead of leaves and stems to get a high cannabinoid concentration.

For a strong tincture, double the quantity of cannabis flower or halve the quantity of alcohol. Besides, you may cut down the white sugar quantity by half to get a more potent cannabis sugar. Remember that using equal parts of sugar and tincture increases the evaporation time.

Edibles take a couple of hours to show their effects. Do not double the potency if you are unsure about it. If it’s your first time, it’s better to take a bigger bite than double the dose. Alternatively, you may increase the potency of cannabis, by using cannabis sugar along with cannabis-infused oil.
